Student Loan

& Financial Assistance

Student loan programs are designed to help you reach your educational/career goal so you can experience the full range of university student life while you balance work and your studies.

Student Aid Alberta Loan application

The Student Aid Alberta Loan application opens early June. To access student loans:

  1. Apply through your province/territory of residency. Applications open in early June for the upcoming academic year (for studies beginning on or after August 1).

  2. After applying you will receive a Student Award Letter and your Master Student Financial Assistance Agreement forms (MSFAA). Your Student Award letter lets you know how much your award will be for the year. You must fill out your MSFAA forms and take them to a designated Canada Post Outlet (list is included in the brown loan application envelope).  You must have government issued photo identification (e.g. drivers' license or passport), government issued proof of social insurance number (SIN card) and banking information with you.

  3. Register in a full-time course load in all of your terms so Visionary Centre for the Performing Arts can confirm your enrolment with your student loan provider. You must be accepted to your program to register in your courses.

  4. Don't pay twice! We will request your tuition to be sent directly from your loan provider if the tuition has not been paid. If you do not have enough funding from your loan provider for your tuition, you are responsible for the balance before the tuition deadline.

  5. Make a budget for the year.

If it seems like you did not receive enough funding to cover your expenses for the year, you might be able to appeal your loan. Submit a request for review or contact your loan provider.

You must apply for funding each academic year.

The above is the process for Student Aid Alberta funding—some provinces and territories may differ slightly in their processes.

Eligibility

for Student Aid Alberta Funding

Government student loans are available based on your financial need and province/territory of residence.

Demonstrate Financial Need

Your allowable costs – your resources = financial assistance (loans and grants)
If your allowable costs outweigh your resources, you are considered in financial need.

Allowable costs

  • Tuition and mandatory fees
  • Books, supplies and instruments
  • Living costs (amount is determined by your situation)

Dependent student

  • Out of regular high school less than four years, or
  • Have not been available for full-time work for at least two years since leaving regular high school.

Independent student

  • You are 23 years or older, or
  • You have been out of high school for more than 4 years, or
  • You have been available for full-time work for two or more years since you left high school, or
  • You are married or common law, or
  • You are divorced, separated, or widowed, or
  • You are single with dependent children.

Your Resources

  • Savings (applies only to federal portion of loan)
  • Expected contribution ($1,500) unless you are a single parent
  • Parental contribution (dependent students only-- appliies only to federal portion of loan)
  • Part-time income while in school (applies only to federal portion of loan)
  • Spouse’s income
  • GICs/stocks/bonds
  • Child support/alimony

Items not considered a resource: your home, vehicle, GST rebate or child tax credit.

Register in Full-Time Post-Secondary Courses

  • While you don’t have to be accepted to your program to apply for loans, you must be registered in a full-time course load in the program for which you applied for funding (in all semesters) before we can confirm your enrolment.
  • Minimum full-time course load = 9 credits in Fall or Winter term. Minimum full time course load for Spring/Summer sessions is as follows:
    • 3 credits in a one-month session (e.g., one 3-credit course within the month of May)
    • 6 credits in a two-month session (e.g., two 3-credit courses May through June)
    • 9 credits over the entire spring/summer period (May though August), with no study gap of 30 days or more.
  • Only post-secondary programs (certificates, diplomas, degrees) are eligible for student loans. For upgrading and ESL programs, see Alberta Works funding.

Maintain Full-Time Course Load

You must maintain your full-time status for the entire period of studies to keep your funding for the year.

Other Considerations

  • First-time loan applicants 22 and older will undergo a credit check
  • Previous student loans must be in good standing
  • Any bankruptcies must be discharged, and if a bankruptcy included student loans, the appropriate wait time must have passed.

Applying

for Student Loans

Determine your province/territory of residence:

You must apply for your funding through your province/territory of residence.

If you are an independent student, you are considered to be a resident of Alberta if:

  • Alberta is the last province you have lived in for 12 consecutive months while not a full-time post-secondary student, or

  • you are attending a school in Alberta and have never lived in any Canadian province for 12 months in a row. In this case, attach a letter to your application to explain your residency situation.

If you are a dependent student, you are considered to be a resident of Alberta if your parent(s) live in Alberta at the time you apply..

Gather information

  • School costs and period of studies

  • Alberta Student Number (Alberta residents only)

  • Social Insurance Number

  • Line 150 of last year’s income tax

  • Parents’ income information (dependent students only)

  • Online applicants who have cashed a loan before must have a previous loan certificate number and loan amount. If you did not keep a copy of your certificate(s), contact the National Student Loan Service Centre for this information.

Apply online

By filling in one application form, you will be assessed for Canada and Alberta Student Loans, as well as grants and bursaries. Online Student Aid Alberta applications are processed in two to three weeks.

Refer to Student Aid Alberta's Monthly Living Allowance estimates. If your living expenses are more than listed, write a letter summarizing your monthly expenses and include appropriate documentation (child care receipts/lease agreement/mortgage statement/three-months-worth of utility bills). Scan and Upload the documents onto the E-Document upload on the Student Finance System website along with a submitted online application.

If you are not able to submit an online application, please contact Student Aid Alberta for the paper application.

Apply early

Student Aid Alberta applications are available at the beginning of June for September study. If you need your loan money to pay for your tuition, you should apply before the end of July for September studies, or the end of October for January studies. You don’t have to be accepted to your program to apply for funding.

Apply each academic year

Your period of studies covers one academic year at a time. You must apply for funding for each year of your studies.

Deadline to apply

You must apply for Student Aid Alberta funding at least thirty days before the end of your yearly period of studies.

Non-Alberta Residents: School/Program Information Forms

Some provinces/territories require that a School/Program Information sheet be filled in by your school. Forward all these requests to a Student Advisor in the Office of the University Registrar.

Schedules – Student Aid Alberta

Fill in Schedule 1 if you are a dependent student:

  • you have been out of regular high school less than four years, or
